Cabrini Connections The staff of the F.I.S.H. Foundation, Inc., met with Dr. Catherine Wolf, M.D., of Friends for Health in Haiti back in the fall of 2009 while Dr. Wolf was in the States for a visit. During our meeting with her, we learned of her years of work as a doctor in Haiti, and found that she was doing a wonderful job with patients in the area of Jérémie. Her most pressing need at that time was for funding to complete her organization’s funds drive to purchase an ambulance for the transport of patients, who in many cases needed to walk for hours to get medical care. Dr. Wolf had already raised funds through individuals and churches to help get this project underway, but needed a significant amount to achieve her goal. Our grant subsequently enabled her to realize the funds needed for this purchase, and a specially built medical transport vehicle was ordered. The vehicle arrived in the harbor of Port-Au-Prince on January 12 - the day the earthquake happened, but was not unloaded and thus was spared. Since then, Dr. Wolf has been happy to report that the vehicle has been unloaded from the ship. While that grant made the ambulance a reality for 2010, the F.I.S.H. Foundation, Inc., is now—since the earthquake—in the initial phases of determining the range of another grant for this year, which will help in the Haitian people’s overall recovery.
