The F.I.S.H. Foundation, Inc., gave a grant to the Edible Schoolyard, which is a one-acre garden and kitchen classroom at the Martin Luther King Jr. Middle School in Berkeley, California. The Edible Schoolyard is a program of the Chez Panisse Foundation, a nonprofit organization founded by chef and author Alice Waters in 1996. Depending on grade level, each of the nearly 1,000 students at the King Middle School attends 12 to 30 sessions in the Edible Schoolyard kitchen and garden classrooms. The program is not an elective, and it was not started with today’s obesity and diabetes crises in mind, but it does offer a powerful approach to educating children about tending a garden as well as preparing, serving, and sharing fresh food.
